SEVEN DAYS OF SANDY DUNES

Right now Dubai seems to be the hottest place for dune driving but with the imminent stream of new Porsche Cayenne Turbo S models now being shipped to UK shores could this be a craze that takes off on our coastlines too?

From Cornwall and Devon to Sussex, Norfolk and even Scotland, there’s plenty of scope for this new sport, we’ve just got to get it past the local councils. With what seems like about Seven days of sunbathing weather in the British calendar, surely dune driving seems a better use for these mounds of sand? In which case, the new sportier Cayenne looks likely to be king of the hill.

Let us just consider the merits of its four-wheel drive system for a moment, which by rights is what you’d buy an SUV for. Looking at the thing you’d sooner believe it would topple over than transport you safely down a steep angled, grainy mass of tiny rock particles. Or perhaps get stuck and dig its wheels further and further in. Science however has given it favourable weight distribution for such feats as well of course as more than adequate power.

Porsche`s Traction Management (PTM) delivers 62 per cent of this power from the engine to the rear wheels, the mathematicians among you will have figured out that a ratio of 38 per cent goes to the front wheels in its basic mode. Though in rather difficult terrain, the longitudinal lock and even the transverse lock can be activated. The PTM system also enhances the SUV’s safety when changing lanes at high speeds or when driving slowly in slippery conditions. Detecting conditions via its sensors, it is able to anticipate what distribution of power is needed for many other circumstances as you may expect from such a high-tech vehicle.
Of course it could never have the ride quality of a sports car because its centre of gravity is too high and there is too much mass which you can’t easily chuck around. Yet true to its sports baging, Porsche has ensured that damping and shock absorption is of the highest possible quality. The air springs are adjustable with integrated self-levelling serving, inter alia which can lower the whole body in two steps at high speeds. The damper forces are also designed to constantly deter body roll and pitch. In addition the Cayenne Turbo S has upgraded brakes and larger, unique wheels as well as a tyre pressure control system which come as standard.

As for being linked to a family of super breeds, the Sport model’s performance figures provide a dead cert that the Cayenne Turbo S is part of the Porsche family. With a 0-60mph time of 5.2 seconds and an in-gear time of 5.4 seconds from 50-75mph, you could hardly quibble that its not exhilarating. Quite happily it will leave many other oversized vehicles in the slow lane while it cruises up to speeds of 167mph. Its 4.5litre twin turbo, V8 configured engine has also seen a few tweaks to its intercoolers in order to serve up more torque and power. Despite being the second most powerful Porsche of all time though, there will be some buyers that will probably never use it for anything more than the school run.
A bold as brass 521bhp is ready to rip, a figure whichsignificantly belittles rivals such as the Range Rover Sport which has 100bhp less but it also a damn sight cheaper. A hefty 531lb ft (720Nm) torque is also available from the Turbo Sport model, at its peak it has 100Nm more than the previous Cayenne. The spread of this torque is at its most generous between 2750 – 3750rpm. The new figures have been achieved by using a throttle butterfly nestled between the two intercoolers. Its job is to further cool the compressed air before it reaches the engine. The heat exchangers which are situated forward from the front wheel arches are now also more efficient. As well as being made of aluminium they are 0.51” larger than the standard Cayenne’s.

The boost pressure was another factor to consider; with an increase of 0.2bar the Cayenne Turbo S has a maximum boost of 1.9bar depending on its speed. It also consumes no more fuel than the previous model within the same speed range. Sadly this only gives it an 18 mile range per gallon of fuel but you may have anticipated such thirst from a monster like this.

In short, for those who love SUV’s for their colossal road presence and also want the status of owning one most others could not afford, then the sport model is for you. There’s no doubt it has both superb engineering and performance but for £81,565, an extra £10,695 more than the standard turbo could you really justify the investment? Of course some people will love it for its unique styling and outright lavish appeal but we’re going to keep our hands in our pockets until they bring dune driving to the UK.
