Spanish Sizzler
Us Brits tend to go a little wayward with freedom when abroad; the sun gets to our head and we forget we have a day job and a home to go back to. If only we could bottle this kind of frivolity…well the Spanish have gone one better and created a car that embodies living ‘la vida loca’.
Skin cancer and breaking legs jet skiing is so 1990s; at least that’s what you’ll tell yourself as you pass the summer by at the race circuit in your new Aspid Sports car. Despite it not being the most practical investment you’ve ever made at least you’ll never spend a weekend wondering how the other half live and hankering after missed opportunities. We’re not saying that experiencing 0-100mph in 5.9 seconds is the only enlightenment you’ll ever need but it will reclaim a bit of individuality back.
How so? Like you’re not becoming your boss, your father and the opera loving, salad munching modern man you’re wife has always wanted you to be? Since when did you want a loft conversion rather than a sports car? Man-up, my friend! Does the Aspid Sports car look like every other blindingly quick two-seater? No, it has balls – the Spanish kind and from what our women can verify; that’s a good thing.
It has all the intrigue of a kit car, the dimensions of a small city car and the power of a Super Car. Combining a mass of just 75kg with a 2-litre supercharged 400bhp engine is a scary proposition but when you consider it has ten times the torsional stiffness of a conventional un-panelled space frame, life doesn’t feel quite so fragile.
Its low weight and aluminium extrusion composite construction also has a significant bearing on C02 and fuel costs but we’re guessing these kind of savings will be heralded more by the maker than by you guys. You’ll be much more concerned with the double wishbone suspension and the way it commands the road beneath it. Its safety aids you’ll also be thankful for and of course its braking efficiency. In keeping with its light-weight rules the stainless steel discs are thin and twinned with turbine-shaped slots to maximize air cooling.
To get even more technical, and after all this car is very much geared towards the real motorsport fanatics – you the driver get to control all the fun bits like the rev limit, power output, steering assistance and brake balance. The pitch, roll and yaw of the car are all in your hands as is the ride height, stability controls and even the noise valve.
A clever touch screen onboard system, which is accessible to both the driver and co-driver offers extendable data logging and diagnostics. This is complemented by GPS, motion sensing accelerometers, Wi Fi wireless technology and various other electronics. There’s plenty to play around with and no doubt you’ll enjoy perfecting your road and track set-up and fine-tuning your performance.
Prices are yet to be confirmed but a handful of enthusiasts are expected to experience the Spanish Sizzler this summer.
